Not such a long time ago a flight upgrade wasn’t the rare thing it is today. Today chances of getting an upgrade have gone down, but there's still the possibility to get upgraded to first class for free, here are some tips on how to get bumped up to first class:
How to get bumped up to first class?

1- Be a loyal customer

If you fly a lot on the same airline, the options for getting updates go up a lot. Travelers who earn miles are the first to be chosen for most upgrades. If you travel with the same airline often, you'll see upgrade offers, often at no cost.

2- Get an airline credit card

Using an airline credit card allows you to rack up miles, including sign-up bonuses, that you can apply toward upgrades.

3- Check in online as soon as possible

The first arrived has the best chance to get an upgrade, even if it is usually for a fee. As the minutes pass and more and more travelers arrive, some of them will search and pay for upgrades, and once those seats are sold out you will no longer have a chance to upgrade.

4- Just ask

During the onboarding, you can just ask politely if the company is upgrading to first class. There are many reasons why there could be an upgrade and asking doesn't cost anything!

5- Full flights give you a better chance

If the flight is full, the chances are better. Airlines plan carefully how much more flights they take, and sometimes passengers have to be moved to other classes to accommodate them all. Therefore, on a full flight, airlines are sometimes forced to upgrade people. In this case you might be lucky.

6- Look for promotions

Sometimes airlines make promotions on business and first class tickets, such as two-for-one promotions. In this case, you can buy two first class tickets for the price of two economy class tickets! Just make sure you are up to date on promotions for the flight you are interested in, these offers usually expire quickly!

7- Ask your travel agent

If you book your trip with a travel agency you can ask if there is a possibility of getting a first class ticket instead of an economy one. Travel agencies have good relationships with airline salesmen and this can give you a chance to earn some favours just like an upgraded ticket.
