The best economic destinations for skiing in Europe: 7 destinations
Skiing holidays often require a high budget. We have listed some European ski resorts at affordable prices, without losing sight of the quality for those who want to enjoy a low-cost skiing holiday.
Here are our tips on the 7 best destinations for skiing at low prices:
- Livigno, Italy
- Niederau, Austria
- Bansko, Bulgaria
- Cauterets, France
- Poiana Brasov, Romania
- Sestriere, Italy
- Jasna, Slovakia
Let's see them in detail one by one:
Livigno, Italy

But how is it possible that such a popular destination in Italy is so cheap? The secret lies in the tax laws of the area (the tax is practically zero), which makes it an ideal destination for low-cost skiing holidays.
To reach Livigno you can take a flight to Milan and from there continue with one of the many shuttle services.
Niederau, Austria
In the heart of Austria, the village of Niederau is part of the Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau ski area and the Ski Juwel area has 109 km of slopes. A free, fast and efficient bus service connects the various lifts.
Ideal for beginners, intermediate skiers and snowboarders, more experienced skiers may find less interest and fun.
The area is incredibly beautiful, with many tree-lined slopes to explore. Thanks to its low prices, for decades it has been one of the favourite destinations for skiers from all over Europe who are looking for a low-cost mountain holiday (in fact, you can find many hotels at affordable prices).
Bansko, Bulgaria

The resort experienced a boom in real estate development in the early 1990s, with the construction of many hotels and apartments located near the gondola (the only access to the ski area).
Over time Bansko has earned a reputation as one of the best cheap ski resorts in Europe. To reach Bansko by plane it is worth taking a flight to Sofia and reach the ski resort by bus (about 2 hours and 30 minutes).
Cauterets, France
Skiing in France is usually synonymous with the "Alps" but there is a much cheaper option without sacrificing the quality of the facilities: the Pyrenees.
At Cauterets you can try your hand at a total of 23 slopes, including 2 for experts, 8 for advanced skiers and 9 for intermediate skiers. There are also some ski schools for those who want to try their hand at the snow for the first time.
For those who want to reach this area by plane, Toulouse airport is well served and is about an hour and a half drive from Cauterets.
Poiana Brasov, Romania

With only 24 km of slopes (for a total of 12 slopes), Poiana Brasov is certainly not the largest of the ski areas, but offers some pleasantly long slopes and frequent offers for night skiing.
It is certainly one of the best cheap ski resorts in Europe and is also relatively easy to reach, since flights to Bucharest are very frequent.
Sestriere, Italy
The site of Alpine Skiing World Cup competitions, Sestriere renovated its infrastructure for the 2006 Winter Olympics. The 164 km of the Sestriere ski area becomes 400 km if you calculate the total of the Vialattea ski area of which Sestriere is the centre.
Over the years it has become one of the most famous winter sports resorts in the Alps.
To reach Sestriere you can take a flight to Turin and from there reach the facilities in a short time.
Jasna, Slovakia

The ski area has 50 km of slopes with a surprisingly modern, fast and efficient lift infrastructure. But what sets Jasna apart are the off-piste areas. These range from beautiful, easy-to-follow fresh snow trails to challenging ones.
For its value for money, Jasna is one of the best low-cost ski holiday destinations in Europe. Not only is it suitable for small budgets, but it also offers great possibilities to vary between piste and off-piste.
